The iconic opening is essentially a remake of the director's short "The Sitter" from two years prior. "The Sitter" is a frightening film in its own right, and Carol Kane perfects the role in this version. The middle act transparently was added to pad the film to feature length, but once Kane's character reappears in the third act, the film sharpens and builds to another shocking domestic scene. Not to be missed.
Really more like two or three movies sandwich together. I’d forgotten about the long section in the middle with no Carole Kane! It still holds up pretty well, but not quite the masterpiece. I remember it as
