Shout out to Crispin Glover for his unnerving portrayal of Uncle Julian. When I recognized him I knew they were taking the”this family is insane”route. Not too creative, but they did well and the main actresses absolutely captured the spirit of their characters.
I don’t know why everybody seems to call this a faithful adaptation. A change of a certain major plot point here alters the whole meaning of the story.
This could have gone so wrong given the complex nature of Shirley Jackson's novel. Fortunately, the creators of this film chose not to do a strictly literal adaptation but made something of their own that is true to the core of Jackson's novel but cinematic as well. We Have Always Lived in the Castle is a treasure.
Slow burn, but good acting and character development. Just creepy and uncomfortable enough.
