this is fun and really beautifully shot. it's in the same territory as Raw, Ginger Snaps, or Teeth: the feminine monstrous rendered emancipatory. i love that it brings the same heart to a scene where one of the protagonists puts stickers everywhere and body horror. this is beautifully made and well acted, with great gore and some really good telegraphic character work. i love that they manage to land all the punches while still being so fun and cute! that takes skill and a very particular touch. really fabulous. i can't wait to see more by the director.
boring
I thought it was a really good story about a young woman freeing herself of the taboos surrounding puberty and womanhood in her religiously conservative community. I absolutely love the end and appreciate the symbolism all the way through. one of my faves now!
Hey, so it’s 2025. Can the human race stop perpetuating the myth that as soon as a woman comes of age she’s somehow unclean and possessed by evil spirits? I get that it’s symbolic, but the symbolism is inherently stupid. The whole thing smacks of ooga booga woman bleed for seven days put her in cave unga bunga whole tribe will be cursed. Are we still a bunch of primitive idiots who believe women are the root of all evil? Apparently we’ve completely stopped evolving a few thousand years ago because this ridiculous narrative still exists today.
This has a lot of promise in the beginning. But it feel flat for me in the middle and ending. Not enough context and storytelling.
