The cinematography and atmospheric gloom are exquisite. The music, the costumes, the script -- brilliant. Acting is well done throughout. The freakin' marionette? Equal parts unsettling nightmare fuel and stupidly ingenious decision. This is folk horror done at its apex. Fans of Robert Eggers' "The Witch" (or "The VVitch" hahaha) will most likely adore this film -- it burns the same, and shares many elements that move us to a grim finale. "The Vourdalak" is close to perfect, but loses a little momentum in its portrayal of hopelessness and in its execution of the horror side of the balance between it and comedy. Definitely worth a watch for those that can appreciate stylized folklore.
Haha, yes! Another Very French victory. You will have to read subtitles. But if you like gothic horror, puppets, or freaky sex twists, this is the Halloween movie for you. I enjoyed it much better than the overblow Eggers film (although both are pretty funny :)
This is peak folk horror. Long live Gorcha!
perfect adaptation!
Great, now I'm scared of puppets.
