The Others

The Others

Directed by Alejandro Amenabar

While awaiting her husband's return from war, Grace and her two young children live an unusually isolated existence behind the locked doors and drawn curtains of a secluded island mansion. Then, after three mysterious servants arrive and it becomes chillingly clear that there is far more to this house than can be seen, Grace finds herself in a terrifying fight to save her children and keep her sanity!

In this haunted essential, Grace and her children live in isolation in a frightening mansion.

At least it's competently made? This feels like what you get when you ask someone who hates the horror genre to make a horror film. Overly reliant on audio-blast jump scares and over-acting to sell the thin veneer of dread, The Others copies The Innocents' homework without bothering to copy anything that made it beautiful or scary. The "big twist" is the best part of the movie until you think about the logistics of it for more than three seconds. A dull, unscary, paper-thin slog. Produced by Tom Cruise and the Weinsteins you say? I can tell.

Love a good mind-blowing twist. Never saw it coming and it concludes in a way that gives closure in a somewhat reassuring way.
