The House of the Devil
Directed by Ti West
A stranger lures a babysitter to a house with an unusually large sum of money. But when she arrives, Samantha doesn’t find any kids. Just a large and very creepy house, that may not be as empty as it seems. Indie horror director Ti West (THE INNKEEPERS) made his mark with this terrifying ‘80s throwback, featuring cult horror legends like Dee Wallace (THE HOWLING), Mary Woronov (NIGHT OF THE COMET), plus Greta Gerwig - before she hit it big. You’ll never bop around listening to headphones in an empty house again after watching what happens to Samantha. Contains violence and gore.

It's a highly rated movie, but undeserving. THOTD would work equivalently as a short, & you can experience it that way. As the plot shows no progression until the final 20min, you can just fast-forward to the last 20 minute mark and get the full experience. Before that, there is some eerie stuff, some atmosphere, 1 murder, & no plot. If you consider value versus time, then the bits which were revealed before the final 20 minutes are worth leaving unanswered, just to save time.
A vibe. Laid the groundwork for a return to 70s and 80s horror aesthetics that a lot of "elevated horror" leans on.
It's an old plot, the babysitter used for a Satanic sacrifice, but it is well done here. Does a nice job of raising tension throughout. Ti West in proving to be the best modern horror director.
i mean it was a story. sort of anticlimactic though.
decent film
