The Found Footage Phenomenon

The Found Footage Phenomenon

Directed by Phillip Escott, Sarah Appleton

The Found Footage Phenomenon tracks the untold story of the found footage film, from its origins before and within Cannibal Holocaust, The Blair Witch Project and The Last Broadcast, beyond its boom in the late noughties with Paranormal Activity, Cloverfield and REC. The documentary showcases how found footage horror became a global sensation with films such as Kōji Shiraishi’s NOROI: The Curse, Shirome and Occult, The Paz Brothers’ JeruZalem, André Øvredal’s Trollhunter and also the differences between how the British and American film industries took to the genre respectively. Found footage spans four decades already and films such as Host, Death of a Vlogger and Spree have proven that it’s not done with us yet. A SHUDDER ORIGINAL.

A documentary tracking the history of the untold story of the global sensation; found footage.

Cast: Ruggero Deodato, Eduardo Sanchez, Lance Weiler, Stefan Avalos, Oren Peli

Very basic "history of" documentary that covers my personal favorite subgenre of horror. I loved being able to hear the history through the eyes of the people who made it famous, but truthfully I wish it gave a little more time to YouTube horror and how webseries like Marble Hornets gave the genre a second life. Also could not stand the Megan is Missing glazing, as that movie is buns outside of the one scene it got right.

A thoughtful, if not comprehensive, of one Horror's most interesting sub-genres. I hope we get a sequel.

Great Documentary, I'm a big fan of Alexandra Heller-Nicholas book on found footage and it was a wonderful surprise to see her interviewed in this movie. It could have been more in-depth, but there aren't many Docs that cover found footage so I can't complain really, perfect introduction to the genre.

Okay documentary. It offered some unique insights but nothing really earth shattering or game changing to horror fanatics. If you are new to the genre and particularly the found footage sub-genre, then this is a good place to start.
