The Cabinet of Dr Caligari

The Cabinet of Dr Caligari

Directed by Robert Wiene

This still scary German silent is one of the most important horror films ever made. At the local town fair, the creepy Dr. Caligari sets up shop with a sleepwalking assistant. Soon enough, those who cross their path begin turning up dead. Featuring a stunningly gorgeous set design inspired by the angular extremities of German expressionist art, a subtle prediction of the dark direction Germany was headed, and a twist-ending that's been copied by countless filmmakers all over the world, THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI is a must-see for any true horror fan.

All of the acting, blocking and cinematography was perfect, it felt like a stage play! As far as early movies go, this was both enjoyable and easy to watch, although I did have a few issues in act 2 but were pretty minor! I enjoyed seeing Dr. Caligari hamming it up though! 9/10

The standard for which all films should be held. Please upload more classic films. Thanks, Shudder.

I dont have much patience for silent films but this is an absolute exception. The set design alone is worth the watch.

After more than 100 years still very enjoyable. Beautiful cubic decors. Simple yet effective story.
