One of the best thriller about snuff films, which depict the killing of human being - a human sacrifice (without the aid of special effects or trickery) perpetrated for the medium of film and circulated amongst a jaded few for the purpose of entertainment.
Quite watchable with an alluring, if brutal, premise. But at least thirty minutes too long and hobbled by some gaping plot holes. Totally unrealistic that the protagonist would wait so long to go to the police when it's all on tape; there's a snuff gang running around; and she suspects that someone has prowled her home where her unaware family also dwells! Sure, why not endanger my family, while striving to protect my sister's virginity! And much later she ends up with the creepy guy who snuck into her home to film her as she slept!? Why does she need to end up with anybody? And what role did Pr. Figuero play in that gang? If he knew where to locate the snuff film, then he must have known what was on it and therefore, must have had some involvement. So why would it cause him to have an asthma attack and die? Where are the police? Wouldn't the police have checked the security footage first thing? The parts that focused on her "awakening" struck me as Hallmarkish and unnecessary, as did the long heavy-handed denouement that tries to tack on a socially relevant message. If you wish to see a similarly themed film that does it perfectly, see 8 1/2 MM, a terrific Schumacher (sp. ?) film with a VERY satisfying character arc, courtesy of Nicholas Cage, and a coda done right. TESIS could have been so much more than its . . . well, thesis, but for what it is, it is still worth a view. At the very least TESIS innovated the reveal of double antagonists instead of just one killer, as is the wont, and in this regard, predated Wes Craven's SCREAM by eleven months. So there's that.
it was slow and didnt show really anything to be on Shudder, but still had a good plot and it kept you going back and forth with who it was.
A 90's classic. Stellar cast, beautifully shot.
Fun film about films
