Easily one of the worst films I have ever seen, horror or otherwise.

This movie is so misunderstood. It's campy as hell and I love it. It makes fun of horror tropes, film tropes in general (he magically learns karate? You can't tell me that wasn't meant to be comedy), he makes fun of his own films, and he makes fun of film in general. I mean the guy works at a TV store, he gets his evil powers granted by Satan through a tv! There has to be some sort of mocking of the idea that bad movies can make people evil, just as much as there is commentary on how evil presents itself in numerous ordinary, everyday people rather than a big bad boogeyman like Freddy. Wes Craven would essentially remake this film later in life as My Soul to Take to arguably greater success, but this film is much less of a mess than that one, and it looks nicer too. Both of them have that weird absurdist surrealism that I can only name in very few films, The Exorcist III probably being the best one. This movie is so underappreciated. I also think it's necessary to really understand My Soul to Take.

Movie is way longer than it needs to be. If it focused more on showing the families being brutally killed and less on goofy stuff it could have stayed frightening. As it is it's a hilarious mess.

I hate this movie. It's bonkers, but not in a good way.
