i enjoyed the movie, most movies that take place in one setting I can get behind because it forces meaningful actions to move the plot forward.

Night of the Hunted started out OK enough; but then they tried to be ‘relevant’ and edgy with inept political and societal commentary, and it set the whole thing ablaze. Making such things the killer’s motivation is fine, but hammering them in so unsubtly again and again, making clunky attempts at overarching condemnations and trying to be some kind of poignant statement cost the film everything. The dialogue is cringe-inducing, and thematically it doesn’t explore anything interesting or innovative — instead coasting on tired tropes and timely stereotypes. Some of its moralising is truly pathetic. As a result of these shortcomings, the film drags despite its concise runtime and gets tiresome long before the end. I don’t care about any of these awful characters and the tedious attempts at provocation (with 2-D culture-war caricatures) doesn’t help matters. The filmmaking is average, doing nothing to stand out or experiment, and performances are fine but forgettable. There are also logical issues in my eyes — such as the killer’s seemingly infinite ammo and spurts of questionably quick amounts of time between shots; or the fact that this petrol-station, supposedly pretty deserted late at night, has a new customer arriving every 15 minutes. All of this leads to an underwhelming, unsatisfying finale — doubling down on all the aforementioned issues and delivering a predictably stupid conclusion. In short, this is the average 2020’s horror flick — a decent premise with plenty of potential, ruined by being weakly written, stuffed with corny cliches, and focussing more on ideology than entertainment or art. An unremarkable slice of the obnoxious subpar. More week-old roadkill for a genre in desperate need of fresh meat.

This was entertaining and fun, different than most thrillers. Worth a watch.
