Inferno
Directed by Dario Argento
In Dario Argento’s follow-up to SUSPIRIA, a man investigates witches who may inhabit the New York apartment building where his sister lived before she mysteriously disappeared. But after Mark begins to seek out the truth, he soon finds himself caught in a labyrinth of lies, murder and unspeakable evil. Despite the initial critical drubbing it received, INFERNO is now regarded as one of Argento’s masterpieces, thanks to its over-the-top use of color and outrageously twisted murder sequences. The opening underwater sequence is a masterclass in suspense and horror.

eee it is so good! Wouldn't mind Luca Guadagnino making a remake of this one too.
I enjoyed the approach of this flick. The motivations for the protagonists made sense, even if a bit slow paced. The vibrant sets drew me in on the first watch. Some other viewers pointed out the seemingly haphazard continuity (which is fair) but it lends to the disorienting atmosphere imo. There’s a clever spin on the otherwise typical suspects behind the sinister actions in the building, I won’t spoil it. Also for anyone who saw the first Puppet Master from Fullmoon, Irene Miracle makes a great turn in this one. Highly recommmended.
It's a hilariously bad mess...but that's truly what makes me love Inferno. Yeah, the whole movie is funnier than it is scary, but that doesn't mean it also doesn't have its moments of terror (I'll never forget how that underwater scene really made me crap myself), on top of some beautiful and creative kills to boot, thanks to non other than Argento's masterful directing. Every death in this movie is artsy and brutal, and it has a wonderful score to boot. The rest of the movie has no actual sense of writing or even mythos to speak of, which will be frustrating for those who want something more coherent, but if you don't take it too seriously, you'll most likely enjoy it as much as everything else Argento has done.
This film elevates horror into art without loosing self-awareness. The lighting and use of colour are amazing. The sets are beautiful. The story is true gothic romance in the literary sense. While the technical limitations show, they can be over looked for a truly interesting and engaging plot about the supernatural. It's a joy to watch even in the scary or just plain odd parts.
love it!
