You know, I didn't have high expectations for this after 2 and 3, but this really does land it. No goofy monologues, no weird savior nonsense, just a haunted house and its victims. The ties back to the earlier films are tight and don't try rewriting what we've already seen, the scares are well presented and paced. If you liked 1, you could skip 2 and 3 and watch this one and this would land well.
This movie is fantastic. Its up there with the first one.
Best one since the 1st one.
This is a good film. Definitely worth watching. Just different from all the others in the series. It's attempts to be a bit contemplative and investigative for most of the movie, with a few scares along the way. However, the last 1/3 of the movie is pretty good and creepy - living up to the standards of the previous films in the series. This film does try to answer some questions about the history of the Carmichael Manor, but also introduces more questions. It's still difficult to connect all the dots. (I'll probably have to re-watch it a few times to figure out who some of the characters were in the film). What more can anyone do with the storyline and frights to put in a sequel, without re-hashing the same scares in the previous films? The answer is I think this series has run it's course and should be left alone from here on out, lest it become an un-ending Scream or Halloween trope series. In my mind, the concepts of the first few films were really well done, and you can't do much more with it. So, in conclusion, watch this film, but know that it is a different kind of film than the predecessors.
Nailed the mood, the pacing, and the scares that made the first film so memorable. And refreshing to set it outside the hotel, but still tie it in to the overall story. The closing scene gave me chills as some things clicked into place. I love this series, even when it gets a little over the top. This story brought it back down to earth and retained the chills.
