Halloween II

Halloween II

Directed by Rob Zombie

Michael Myers resumes his murderous mayhem in Rob Zombie's second HALLOWEEN reboot, which moves away from premise of John Carpenter's sequel. Yes, Michael is back, but it's one year later, and Dr. Loomis' latest book is about to blow open the secret of Laurie Strode's connection to Michael Myers. When both Laurie and Michael start having visions - of a woman in white (Sheri Moon Zombie) - it's time for a frightening family reunion. Zombie's supporting cast includes HALLOWEEN 4's Danielle Harris, Margot Kidder, Chris Hardwick, and Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer. Contains strong language, sexual scenes, violence and gore.

Oh look, a Rob Zombie film. Let's see he regurgitates the same hackneyed white trash tattoo aesthetic and pukes his vision all over this story. But wait! There's more. He has to shoe horn his wife into this somehow. But no guys really, he's got interesting new takes on things, like the Shape grunts now! The only redeeming thing about this film is that decent cameo actors got a pay check. Nights in white satin my a$$.

I actually prefer this over the previous movie. The first one felt like a more unpleasant retread of the original, this one feels more like its own movie, and I enjoyed it as a fun slaughterfest.

A number of good scares, some very fine performances. It's understandable that Zombie wanted to put his own stamp on it, yet the dead-mother-as-motivation thread feels derivative of Friday the 13th II and by the time Laurie was being physically held down by her vision of her pubescent brother the theme felt overstated. Dr. Loomis' exploitative books also seem derivative of Gale Weathers' exploitive books in the Scream franchise. Still, the film is alive with Zombie's directorial signatures, well paced, perverse and engaging.
