Always a good ride.
highly entertaining
A bit slow at first, but got better and better! Some of the best visceral horror I've ever seen. Amazing performances by Combs and Crampton.
From Beyond is a bold, grotesque, and utterly fascinating dive into Lovecraftian horror, and it remains one of the most inventive genre films of the 1980s. Stuart Gordon crafts a surreal nightmare filled with body horror, psychological tension, and a relentless sense of unease that keeps you glued to the screen. What truly elevates this film is the electric chemistry between Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton. Their dynamic is layered—equal parts intellectual sparring and raw emotional intensity—which adds depth to the bizarre, otherworldly chaos unfolding around them. Combs brings a manic brilliance to his role, while Crampton delivers a fearless performance that oscillates between vulnerability and dominance, making their interactions unforgettable. The practical effects are gloriously grotesque, pushing boundaries in ways that feel both shocking and artful. Combined with a pulsing score and Gordon’s confident direction, From Beyond becomes more than a horror film—it’s an experience that lingers in your mind long after the credits roll.
Quite a coincidence that I had the very end with the scary cackle burned in my brain my whole life, but I could not remember what movie it was from and I happen upon it today. 40-year mystery finally solved! Thanks, Shudder!
