Fascination

Directed by Jean Rollin

A thief seeks refuge in a castle owned by two female members of a vampire cult in one of French horror maven Jean Rollin's most famous and stylish films. When Marc double crosses his gang, he takes a hostage and hightails it out of town. But when the hostage bolts, Marc hides in the castle, where he meets two lusty lesbians who want him all to themselves. Soon enough Lahaie is cutting Marc's enemies down to size with a scythe, but he soon comes to realize he might have been safer with his vengeful gang.

Better story than I expected, worse pace than feared. This film is beautifully shot, beautifully casted all around, but it suffers very much from Sexy Syndrome. Sometimes the story suffers for the sake of the sexy, sensuous, flat-out-boring shots (I got tired of alliteration). Eva's and Elizabeth's motivations are both compelling: they want liberty but don't yet know how entirely to express it, so they experience it through vampirism. Quite literally bloodlust. Then arrives the bandit, throwing a phallic monkey wrench into their love affair. I gotta say, though, the last 30 minutes of this film pick up the pace and the story equally, making the long-suffering moments worth the wait for such a raw, introspective conclusion.

"love of blood outweighs love of the body in which it flows. " scratches that giallo itch but with so much more melodrama than giallo and a lot less clothing

Great movie! The description is enough to not even bother with the subtitles. Damn, what a bunch of hot women!
