Devil's Pass

Directed by Renny Harlin

Renny Harlin (DIE HARD 2, CLIFFHANGER) brings one of the greatest unsolved mysteries of the 20th century to the screen -- the controversial Dyatlov Pass Incident. In February of 1959, nine Russian hikers ventured into a remote area of the Ural Mountains in Russia. Two weeks later, all nine were found dead. Now, five ambitious American college students are issued a grant to return to the site of the original events in the belief that they can uncover and document the truth of what happened. But what they find is more shocking than anything they could have imagined. The forces behind the Dyatlov Pass Incident have been waiting for them.

5 young adventurers retrace the steps of a doomed group of hikers in pursuit of a legendary paranormal mystery.

Cast: Gemma Atkinson, Holly Goss, Luke Albright

I liked this movie, took a little while to get where it was going, but that's not always a bad thing. Acting wasn't great, but for me it was a pleasant way to kill an hour and forty minutes. As a guy who previously had gone down the Dyatlov Pass rabbithole I thought the explanation the movie offered was cool and did it's best to examine everything that really happened and propose a "possible" theory. Is it a believable theory, idk, but I don't think that's really the point. I had a fun time.

Dragged through the middle, and then went nowhere.

The first half leads to the potential of a great found footage movie. However, in execution, when the CGI monsters show up, it leads to a big dip in quality. The first half feels very real and set in our own world but when the scary monsters come in, it nosedives. Practical effects would really have a gone a long way in making them scarier and more believable. I still like what the ending was going for though.

spoilers.... first half is fine, second half once they start showing the creatures it kinda lost all of the mystery and intrigue. it took a lot of inspiration from blair witch, and it should've probably used the example of the blair witch project not showing the "bad guy", or at least just barely showing anything, in order to maintain the suspense.
