Clown in a Cornfield

Clown in a Cornfield

Directed by Eli Craig

Quinn and her father have just moved to the quiet town of Kettle Springs hoping for a fresh start. Instead, she discovers a fractured community that has fallen on hard times after the treasured Baypen Corn Syrup Factory burned down. As the locals bicker amongst themselves and tensions boil over, a sinister, grinning figure emerges from the cornfields to cleanse the town of its burdens, one bloody victim at a time. Welcome to Kettle Springs. The real fun starts when Frendo the clown comes out to play.

Try to remember the last time you walked through a really chintzy, rednecky haunted house. See the middle aged carny guys dressed as clowns who swing chainless chainsaws around. Hear the thirteen year old townie girls dressed as clowns as they scream in your face. Smell the raspberry vape smoke and stomped-on pot. Mourn the thirty bucks and unreclaimable time you spent to do this because your friends thought it would be badass. Are you there? Are you feeling it all? Okay. Now imagine it's a movie.

A perfectly OK slasher with some good splatter, a bit of mystery, a few interesting plot points. . . but ultimately, behind the clown schtick it's a lot of the same stuff we've been getting out of every rural slasher since TCM. If that's what you're into (no judgment from me), you'll love it. But given all the positive reviews, I was kind of expecting more. (By the way, what is up with all the clowns these days? You got your Terrifiers, your Hell Houses, your Its, and dozen or so more. Clowns have always had an uncanny valley creepiness, but it seems to me the more familiar they get, the less scary and more ridiculous they become. Maybe it's just me. . . )
