Carved: The Slit-Mouthed Woman

Carved: The Slit-Mouthed Woman

Directed by Kôji Shiraishi

In this violent Japanese fright flick based on a popular urban legend, a disfigured female ghost begins kidnapping children in a small town. They call her the “Slit-Mouthed Woman” because a gash across her face gives her a monstrous appearance, similar to the villain in ICHI THE KILLER. When local kids start disappearing, two teachers realize they must stop her before their students wind up dead. Though Kôji Shiraishi's (GROTESQUE) terrifying tale owes a clear debt to CANDYMAN and RINGU, the devlish director manages to put his own uniquely perverse spin on the subject matter. (In Japanese with English Subtitles)

Hear me out… if you ever played GhostWire this would be the story of the tall woman with the coat n scissors 😅. It’s not so scary just slow burn suspense thriller.

Some of the elements felt forced, like they were just trying to check off certain tropes. Other than that, I enjoyed the movie. Thought it was going to be another low-effort Ringu clone from that time, but it did its own thing. I would recommend if you just need to scratch that j-horror itch but have already seen most of the greats.

The atmosphere was on point, especially at the end. Loved the cinematography. It was a very dark horror, especially with the involvement of children. My only main gripe is that I don't really think scissor-mouth lady was that scary. I think they could have made her more menacing, or brought her story up more before she appeared, to raise the tension. I also think they shouldn't have shown her off so early into the film, in the clear daylight. She just popped out in the light like a regular woman going to the shops. They could have perhaps not shown her face as much, and played with dark lighting to hide her face partially/ fully for the first half of the movie. I think that would have made it scarier as I'm all in favour of not showing the monster off; the unknown is scarier. Aside from that, it was a great film. The main woman was STUNNING.

Good make up effects. But, it's not remotely scary or creepy.
