Audition

Directed by Takashi Miike

A man begins a relationship with a very deadly female killer in Takashi Miike's ultra-gory masterpiece. Widower Aoyama falls for the radiant and mysterious Asami. But as he delves into her past, he learns her former acquaintances have either gone missing - or have missing limbs. Will he be next? Thanks to its heart-stopping final act, Miike's chilling tale put him in the pantheon of great horror directors, and led to the J-Horror genre becoming a worldwide phenomenon. If you haven't seen it, be warned: when the needles come out, there's no turning back.... (In Japanese with English Subtitles)

I saw this for the first time back in '03, and rewatch it every few years, and have a different appreciation each time. The other day I logged on to Shudder and it was on the livefeed, at the moment where we find out what's in the bag. Literally iconic. I suspect that the people who are giving low reviews are looking at it in a post 2000s lens. Slow burn, still great.

Older guy thinks with his groin and when people say it’s too good to be true believe them. Other than that pretty lame. for. Full feature film. Would have fit just as well as an hour long X-Files episo and would have landed better that way. This was way too long and it’s too drawn out when a 45 minute episode of the C-files would have been epic. 4 xskull for tv 2 skulls here so I will give it 3 overall.
