My second watch and the film remains overall effective and entertaining with strong performances. It would have benefited from a pruning, say, fifteen minutes? The third act veers off into a surreal nightmare, though a bit heavy-handed. When the film ought to be at its tightest (i. e. , moving toward the climax), it gets repetitive and meanders. In the second act, after the tables have turned, the protagonist is never in danger, which deadens the tension. Even the killer's death scene goes on forever, his thrashing around in the mud for the entire end credits. If he had gouged his throat repeatedly and ferociously (as he does) with his murder weapon of choice, he would have bled out in seconds! One skull lost for pacing and one for its conspicuous messaging.
